| Title: Corduroy Author: Adrian Bell Date published: 1930 Status: in print Price: GBP 6.39 What is it? A memory of a first encounter with Suffolk rural life, at Bradfield St George, in the years between the wars. What's it like? Before I left Mr Jolman's shop I satisfied both my practical and colour-loving selves by buying a red-spotted handkerchief. It was a thing I had secretly envied the labourer since childhood, and now I was in a position not only to own one, but to wear it. What's good about it? The best evocation of the minutae of a single village of the time in print. What's bad about it? Not much. It isn't for you if your main interest is church architecture.
