Icon. Devotional art object, originally from the Orthodox tradition, but increasingly widespread in the Catholic tradition, and beginning to be used in some Anglican churches. Images are generally of particular saints, produced to a formulaic pattern; a candle burns in front of it, and private prayers said. Orthodox theology claims them windows on eternity, perhaps enabling a lucidity and focus in prayer not previously attained. Good icons can be seen at Anglican churches in Chevington, Mendlesham and Ufford, as well as in most Catholic churches.
